Description

Position Summary

Minnesota has some of the largest education disparities in the nation and you can make all the difference. Join an innovative team dedicated to advancing equity and helping all students succeed.

As a Scholar Coach, you’ll serve at a local school and be embedded in a K-3 classroom. You’ll partner with the classroom teacher to promote scholastic engagement and help students become better readers. Every day, you’ll also meet with students one-on-one or in pairs to provide extra practice and build skills.

With specialized training and on-site coaching, we’ll prepare you to help kids succeed. Students make the most progress when you are there, so Scholar Coaches serve Monday-Friday and are needed for the whole school year. We are currently recruiting Scholar Coaches for the 2023-24 school year, and have options to begin in August, October or January.

This is an AmeriCorps member position with the Total Learning Classroom Initiative of Reading Corps. The initiative focuses on supporting schools with high academic needs. Together, we’re on a mission because kids who read have the power to succeed!

What to Expect

  • Use proven strategies to help students build their skills, confidence and engagement.
  • Collaborate with coaches to monitor student progress and see what’s working.
  • Conduct skill assessments and enter student scores into data management software.
  • Respond to feedback and commit to continuous improvement through coaching, training and professional development.
  • Represent Reading Corps at school-sponsored activities and share your experience with the wider community to help build awareness.

Qualifications

Reading Corps takes ordinary people and trains them to be great Scholar Coaches. Anyone can become a Scholar Coach as long as they have a passion to take action for kids – and meet the following minimum qualifications.

  • Dependable and have a history of good attendance
  • Able to understand and follow instructions
  • Open to making improvements based on feedback

  • 18 years of age or older with a high school diploma or equivalent
  • A citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident of the United States*
  • Able to successfully complete a background check
